HISTORY
P.O.S.S.E. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded from one family’s educational journey and commitment to helping other families better understand and navigate the special education process.
P.O.S.S.E. began in 1998 after my son, Michael, was diagnosed with Dyseidetic and Dysphonetic Dyslexia — language-based learning challenges affecting both visual and auditory processing.
At the time, Michael was in the second grade and fortunate to have a teacher who recognized that he had significant academic needs. Although it was clear that additional educational support was necessary, there was limited guidance available regarding appropriate intervention programs and specialized educational services. As a parent, I became deeply involved in researching learning challenges, educational interventions, assessments, remediation programs, and the IEP process to better support my son’s educational journey.
Like many families navigating learning challenges, our experience brought emotional, educational, and organizational challenges that often felt overwhelming. Through years of educational planning, school meetings, assessments, tutoring, and ongoing support services, I gained firsthand understanding of the importance of preparation, collaboration, educational knowledge, and meaningful parent participation within the educational process.
What began as a personal journey soon developed into a larger purpose — helping other families feel more informed, organized, supported, and confident while navigating their own child’s educational path.
P.O.S.S.E. was created from Michael’s belief that no child should experience discouragement or feel unsuccessful because of learning challenges. Every child deserves the opportunity to experience confidence, independence, dignity, understanding, and success throughout their educational journey.
From that vision, P.O.S.S.E. was created.
